Big Brother & The Holding Company Book "Living with the myth of Janis Joplin" by Michael Spörke. Big Brother & the Holding Co. were and are far more than Janis Joplin backup band. The press’ exclusive focus on Janis distorted the meaning of Big Brother, and, indeed, of the sixties counterculture which was not about “single stars” but about the whole constellation of community. Originally printed in German under the title Die Band, die Janis Joplin beruhmt machte; Sam Andrew graciously translated the book in to English.
